Maintaining Your Awning - A Guide to Longevity
Simple Steps to Keep Your Solaris Canada Awnings in Top Condition
Our awnings are not only easy to operate, they’re also easy to maintain. To start with, the location of your awning determines the frequency we recommend cleaning it. If your home is located inland, you should clean your awning twice a year. If you are on or near the ocean, you should clean your awning once a month due to the salt exposure.
- To clean your awning, spray off loose debris and dirt with a water hose. For bird droppings and other attached residue, use warm water and a soft bristled scrub brush on the spot requiring attention before rinsing with your hose. After you have removed any loose dirt and/or residue, allow your awning to dry completely before coating with a rain repellent such as Scotch Guard.
- If your awning fabric has tougher stains such as mildew, you can attempt to remove the stains with a mild soap, such as Ivory Snow or Woolite, with warm water and a soft bristled scrub brush. Avoid using any product with the word "detergent" in it. Again, only use a mild soap. After using the soap, rinse the awning thoroughly with water from your hose. Allow the awning to dry completely before coating the fabric with a rain repellent as mentioned previously.
- Proper care for the frame of your awning includes rinsing it with water from your hose, wiping it down with a soft cloth and using a 100 percent silicone lubricant on all moving parts of the lateral awning. Again, the lubricant must be 100 percent silicone. Avoid using lubricants such as WD-40 as they will leave a residue and may stain your awning's fabric.
- If the fabric is wet after a rainfall, let the awning dry out (2-3hrs) before retracting it. It is safe to roll up a wet awning for one or two nights, if there is continuous bad weather.
- Do not use awning during a snowfall. A few snowflakes will not harm it but snow will accumulate and weigh down the awning.
- Retract your awning during strong winds to prevent unnecessary wear and tear.

If your awning is to be installed directly under an eaves trough or soffit then a hood cover is typically not needed. If the awning is to be exposed to sunlight and weather, a hood cover can extend the life of the fabric.
Our fabrics have been tested and proven to provide up to 98% UV protection from the harmful effects of the sun when used in shade applications. This protective factor is inherent to the product and will not be reduced by usage and/or fabric exposure to the sun.
A motor offers ease of use and is required if a wind sensor is needed. Research has shown that motorized awnings are used 4 times more often than a manual control. All our motors come complete with a convenient plug-in cable (no hard wiring is required) and a wireless remote control which will work up to a hundred feet away even through the walls of your home.
This is really a matter of personal taste. All fabrics provide the same shade although a darker fabric will appear darker underneath where a lighter fabric will appear lighter. UV is absorbed at the same levels, light or dark.
A combination of injection die cast, gravity die cast and extruded aluminum make up the framework of our awnings and ensure rust and corrosion will never be an issue. All aluminum components are then powder coated for a lifetime of strength and durability.
Our acrylic fabrics are water-resistant, not waterproof. Because they are woven, they are highly breathable, allowing the fabric to dry quickly with only air exposure. Another advantage to the acrylic fiber is that it will not support the growth of mildew. The fabrics are treated with a fluorocarbon finish, which enhances water repellency, meaning a light to medium rain will not allow water to penetrate.
No. Permits are typically not needed for residential awnings, however if your residence has a condo board or architectural controls you may require approval.
All fabrics featured in our awning collection are 100% solution-dyed, acrylic fabric. The colors in the fabric are dyed into the fibers so that they can't fade or run. In addition to their inherent long-lasting durability, all our fabrics are covered by a 10 year warranty.
